Production tasks

In the synonym production task, the children were told that the experimenter would read out a word and they should think of another word that meant the same thing. They were given a series of 10 words (e.g., “push,” “enormous”) and their responses to each were noted. In the hypernym production task, they were reminded of the computer task they had recently completed (“lemonade is a type of drink”) and were told they should answer “type of ” questions about a set of words (e.g., “What is rain a type of?”).

The tasks were presented in the order described above because we were concerned about carry-over effects from one task to another. In particular, we thought that the computerized tasks (in which word pairs were presented) would help to give children an idea of what was required in the production tasks (though, of course, different words were used in the two types of task, judgment vs. comprehension). Within each task, the order of presentation of words (or word pairs) was randomized separately for each child. The synonym and hypernym productions were scored by two independent raters (the first two authors) and any disagreements were resolved by a third rater (the third author). Usually, productions attracted either 2, 1, or 0 points, with 2 points awarded for the target answer (e.g., pineapple–fruit), 1 point for a partially correct answer (typically a more inclusive category in the case of hypernyms, e.g., pineapple– food, or a closely related word in the case of synonyms, e.g., rescue–help), and 0 for error responses or no response (e.g., in the hypernym task: trumpet–music, and in the synonym task: many–few). In rare cases where a more specific category was produced, a score of 3 was awarded (e.g., trumpet–brass instrument, where 2 would be awarded for the more common response, musical instrument).
